Trump Promises to Call Putin and Zelensky on Election Night to End Ukraine War

Former US President Donald Trump told rally attendees in Nevada that if elected, he would contact Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on election night to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

“I’m going to work on that from the day we win, hopefully on 5 November in the evening,” Trump stated. “On the evening of 5 November, I will call Putin and I will call Zelensky. I’ll say, ‘We’ve got to stop it.’”

Trump expressed his determination to act quickly, saying, “I’m going to try and get it done as president-elect. That’ll give me plenty of credibility. I don’t have to wait until 20 January [Inauguration Day]. I’m going to try and get it done sooner than that.”

At 78, Trump has consistently claimed that he could negotiate a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict in just one day.

Last month, the 45th president met with Zelensky at Trump Tower in Manhattan and highlighted their “very good relationship.” Additionally, journalist Bob Woodward reported that Trump had “as many as seven” phone conversations with Putin since leaving the White House less than four years ago.

“Sadly, there’s zero chance that Putin would have gone into Ukraine if I were president,” Trump remarked on Thursday night. “Zero chance. What a shame that is.”
