A 75-year-old man, Chief Stephen Irobunda, has been arrested in Abia State for allegedly shooting and killing 45-year-old Bright Odizuru Martins.
The fatal incident occurred on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, in Umuodum Ohokobe Ndume, Umuahia North Local Government Area.
According to reports, a group of young people, including the victim, were playing football near the suspect’s residence. This reportedly angered the elderly man, who emerged from his home armed with a dane gun and fired shots into the air, dispersing the group.
The youths later returned to confront the suspect about his actions. During the ensuing argument, the suspect allegedly shot the victim in the stomach. The injured man was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Enraged by the incident, the youths attempted to lynch the suspect and set his house on fire. However, security forces intervened and prevented further violence.
The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the killing and stated that investigations are ongoing.
