A Shari’a court in Kano has ordered a mother and daughter to be detained in a health facility and undergo Quranic lessons as punishment for calling their neighbour a prostitute.
Zainab Ibrahim and Rukayya Nazir were arraigned before the court on charges of defamation of character. The complainant, Sadiya Nasir, alleged that the duo had insulted her by calling her a prostitute.
After pleading guilty to the charges, the court, presided over by Khadi Shamsuddeen Ado Abdullahi, sentenced the defendants to detention at a health facility in Kansakali, where they will receive Quranic instruction.
The court also ordered the defendants to publicly retract their statements before a gathering of their neighbours.
