Bauchi State Spends N1 Billion on Foodstuffs While Key Sectors Suffer

A review of Bauchi State’s budget performance by SaharaReporters has revealed that the state spent N1 billion on foodstuffs and catering materials between January and September 2024.

This expenditure surpasses the amount spent on several crucial areas, including the rehabilitation/repair of water facilities (N61.9 million), hospitals/health centers (N123.1 million), and public schools (N368 million).

Additionally, the state allocated N374.1 million for the construction/provision of water facilities, N978.6 million for public schools, and N241.1 million for agricultural facilities, all of which are lower than the spending on foodstuffs and catering materials.

The review also shows that while N1 billion was spent on foodstuffs and catering materials, only N63.5 million was allocated for erosion and flooding control. This is particularly concerning given the flooding in September that resulted in 15 deaths and 163 injuries.

Despite the significant spending on foodstuffs and catering materials, the capital expenditure for a specialist hospital in Bauchi was just N147 million. These revelations have sparked concerns about the poor management of resources by state governments, especially given the inadequacy of available resources.
