Equatorial Guinea’s government has dismissed Baltasar Ebang Engonga from his position as Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) following the widespread circulation of explicit videos involving him and numerous women.
Engonga was initially suspended after the leak of over 300 alleged sex tapes, which reportedly linked him to high-profile figures in the country.
President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo subsequently issued a decree dismissing Engonga, citing misconduct and inappropriate behavior unbefitting of a public official.
State television reported that the sex tapes were leaked while Engonga was detained at the notorious Black Beach prison on charges of embezzlement.
In response to the scandal, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue ordered the telecommunications ministry, regulator, and telecommunications companies to take steps to curb the distribution of the explicit videos.
The government is concerned about the negative impact of the leaked videos on families and public health. The country’s chief prosecutor has warned that Engonga could face additional charges if medical tests confirm he has a sexually transmitted disease.
