Former Equatorial Guinea Anti-Graft Chief Baltasar Remanded in Prison for Allegedly Recording 400 Sex Tapes

Baltasar Engonga, the former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency, has been remanded in custody at Malabo’s Black Beach Prison.

The 54-year-old economist was already under investigation for alleged fraud when authorities discovered that he had allegedly recorded over 400 sex tapes involving the wives of prominent figures in the country.

Following the scandal, President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo dismissed Engonga. Decree No. 118/2024, dated 4th November, cited “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions, as well as inappropriate family and social conduct for the performance of public duties” as the reasons for his dismissal.

A video that went viral on social media on Friday, 8th November, showed Engonga handcuffed and shackled during a court appearance.

French online blog Afrikmatin confirmed that Engonga, who was officially removed from his position on 6th November 2024, was subsequently transferred to Malabo Central Prison.

He now faces charges of corruption and embezzlement.
