At least eight people are feared dead and over 20 others are missing after a speedboat carrying mourners capsized in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 23rd November 2024, on Bennett River, near Warri.
Reports suggest that the boat, travelling at high speed, was returning from a burial ceremony when it struck a submerged log in the creeks. The impact caused the vessel to capsize.
Many of the victims, who were not wearing life jackets and could not swim, tragically drowned.
The body of a one-year-old child was later recovered, floating in the creeks.
