A Fan Found Dead After Alleged Racist Gesture in England’s National League North

A Chester FC supporter accused of making racist monkey gestures towards a black footballer during a National League North match in England was found dead just hours after the incident.

The incident occurred during a local derby against Warrington Town at the Cal.Delivery Stadium, where 2,296 fans were in attendance. The supporter was captured on video making the offensive gesture towards Warrington Town player Bohan Dixon as he celebrated his team’s opening goal. Objects were also reportedly thrown onto the pitch during heated moments of the match.

The video footage was widely shared on social media, sparking outrage. Although an image of the alleged individual circulated online, his identity has not been officially disclosed.

Chester FC condemned the incident, stating it was “angry and dismayed at an alleged instance of racism” and promising full cooperation with Cheshire Police by providing video and photographic evidence. The club emphasised its zero-tolerance stance, saying, “Racism has no place in sport or society,” and confirmed that anyone found guilty would receive an indefinite ban from attending matches.

In a tragic twist, the club later announced the death of the individual involved. “It is with sadness Chester FC has been made aware of the tragic death of the individual involved. The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family and friends,” read the statement.

Cheshire Police confirmed that the man, who was due to be questioned about the incident, died on Sunday, 1 December, at an address in Flint, North Wales. They added that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and a file would be prepared for the coroner. The case has also been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in line with standard procedure.

The incident followed a penalty scored by Connor Woods in the 73rd minute to put Warrington Town ahead. Dixon’s celebration in front of Chester supporters reportedly led to the gesture being made. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after Chester’s Harrison Burke equalised in the 85th minute, with Warrington captain Josh Amis being sent off earlier for violent conduct.

The result left Warrington in 18th place, three points above the relegation zone, while Chester remained in seventh, securing their position within the play-off places.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of addressing racism in football. As investigations continue, it serves as a reminder of the need for stronger measures to combat discrimination in the sport and society at large.
