Gunmen have killed a man identified as Bright Ezechukwu, less than 24 hours before his wedding in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to Daily Trust, the tragic incident occurred on 22 November 2024, when Bright went to Ihiala town to pick up his fiancée, Chinwendu. He was accompanied by his best man and the chief bridesmaid.
Bright and Chinwendu were scheduled to marry on Saturday, 23 November. However, as the couple, along with their companions, were returning to the Uli community in the same local government area, gunmen attacked, shooting Bright dead.
Bright’s younger brother recounted the events leading to the tragedy, saying, “Bright was carrying one of the bridesmaids, while his best man carried Bright’s wife-to-be. Bright was riding behind the convoy of motorcycles. He stopped at Ezego Junction in Ihiala to refuel his motorcycle, unaware he was walking into his death.”
He continued, “The best man and others, riding ahead, assumed Bright was following. However, upon reaching Abbott Boys Secondary School in Ihiala along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway, they realised he was no longer behind them. Attempts to call his phone were unsuccessful.”
“Curious, the best man retraced his steps to search for Bright, only to discover him lying in a pool of blood at Ezego Junction. He had been shot twice in the head along the Onitsha-Ihiala-Owerri Expressway, near Sky Prince Petrol Station close to Okohia Junction,” he explained.
A witness confirmed that the assailants, two unidentified men on a motorcycle, stopped Bright and demanded all his belongings, including his phone, possessions, and motorcycle.
The witness stated, “After taking everything, they still killed him. Bright was such a kind-hearted person who would gladly share his food to maintain peace. These criminals even took the food in the flask he was carrying for the night.”
The witness added, “Despite Bright pleading for his life, explaining he was about to get married, they shot him dead, cruelly robbing him of the joy of becoming a husband.”
