The Police Service Commission (PSC) has taken firm action against several senior police officers, dismissing 19 and reducing the ranks of 19 others. The announcement was made on Friday, December 6, 2024.
Among those dismissed are 10 Assistant Superintendents of Police, 6 Deputy Superintendents of Police, 2 Chief Superintendents of Police, and 1 Superintendent of Police. Additionally, 19 other officers, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, had their ranks reduced.
The Commission also imposed disciplinary measures on two Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs). One AIG was reprimanded for refusing to carry out lawful instructions, while another was issued a warning letter for negligence.
PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani disclosed that other officers were penalised with severe reprimands, reprimands, and letters of warning. Many of the dismissed officers will face prosecution by the Nigeria Police Force’s Legal Unit.
During its recent plenary meeting in Abuja, the Commission deliberated on 110 pending disciplinary cases, 23 appeals and petitions, and 13 court judgments.
PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd.), emphasised the importance of swiftly resolving disciplinary cases to ensure that innocent officers can advance in their careers, while those found guilty are appropriately punished.
He also warned officers against becoming involved in civil matters such as land disputes, marital issues, and rent-related conflicts, urging them to concentrate on criminal matters and threats to life.
