SaharaReporters has reported that a third student from the Nigerian Military School (NMS), Zaria, Kaduna State, has died following an outbreak of an unknown illness at the military facility.
According to multiple sources, the student passed away at 10 am on Friday, bringing the total number of fatalities to three.
A concerned parent, speaking to SaharaReporters, expressed their fears, stating, “Another boy died today, bringing the total to three students who have died as of today. Our children are no longer safe. The army should come out and tell us what’s killing our children. Many are still in critical condition at ABUTH as we speak.”
NMS, a boarding secondary school affiliated with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, has become the focus of concern after two students previously died from the same unknown illness earlier in the week. Additional students have been hospitalised at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), with some reported to be in critical condition.
The outbreak has sparked panic, with many parents rushing to withdraw their children from the school. One parent revealed, “Please, something strange is happening at the Nigerian Military School Zaria. Two students have died so far. Some of the parents, including myself, have withdrawn our children. As we speak, many students are in the hospital, most of them in critical condition.”
The Commandant of NMS, Brigadier General AD Audu, confirmed the deaths and the outbreak of the mysterious illness. He stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause.
“Yes, we lost two students, and some are hospitalised. The cause of this strange illness is being investigated. The results of tests on the first student who died showed cardiovascular issues, but we are still in the emergency response phase to identify the illness and its causes,” he told SaharaReporters.
