Eighteen-year-old Indian grandmaster, Gukesh Dommaraju, has made history by becoming the youngest-ever undisputed classical world chess champion.

In a thrilling final match against defending champion Ding Liren, Gukesh secured a 7.5-6.5 victory in Singapore on Thursday, December 12th.
The final game was a nail-biter, with both players tied going into the decisive round. However, a crucial mistake by Ding allowed Gukesh to clinch the crucial point and the championship title. The young Indian’s victory was met with jubilation from fans both in India and around the world.


Gukesh’s triumph marks a significant milestone in Indian chess, following in the footsteps of legendary player Viswanathan Anand. At just 18, he is the youngest world champion since Garry Kasparov’s historic win in 1985.
The young grandmaster expressed his gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career and acknowledged the role of his family and coaches in his success. He also paid tribute to the growing strength of Indian chess, highlighting the achievements of players like R Praggnanandhaa and R Vaishali.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Draupadi Murmu congratulated Gukesh on his remarkable achievement, praising his talent, hard work, and determination.
