Notorious Bandit Leader Baka Wurgi, Linked to Emir of Gobir’s Murder, Captured by Nigerian Army

Troops from the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have arrested Bako Wurgi, a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, who is suspected of being involved in the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State.

The Emir, his son, and his brother were abducted in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area of Sokoto on 9th July 2024. Tragically, the Emir was killed on 22nd August after ransom negotiations broke down.

On 14th December, acting on intelligence reports, troops apprehended Wurgi at a hospital in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, where he was receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a clash with a rival gang. Two of his accomplices escaped, but another was arrested.

Intelligence sources suggest that Wurgi played a key role in the Emir’s kidnapping and subsequent murder. He is alleged to have strong international links and is related to Bello Turji, another infamous bandit leader. His son, Sani Duna, is reportedly a getaway driver for Turji, highlighting the familial connections within the bandit network.

He is currently being held in custody, and a manhunt is underway for his accomplices.

Residents of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States have welcomed the news, expressing hope that it will help to alleviate the long-standing problem of banditry and violence in the region.
