China executed Li Jianping, a former official in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on Tuesday, 17th December 2024.
Jianping was convicted in the largest corruption case in the country’s history, involving over $421 million.
According to The Indian Express, Li, formerly the secretary of the ruling Communist Party’s working committee for the Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone, was initially sentenced to death in September 2022. The sentence was upheld on appeal in August 2024.
The execution, carried out by a court in Inner Mongolia, followed approval from the Supreme People’s Court, as reported by the state-run Xinhua news agency.
Li, aged 64, was found guilty of embezzling three billion yuan (over $421 million) in illegal gains, the largest amount involved in a single corruption case in China’s history.
Since assuming power in 2012, Chinese President Xi Jinping has made anti-corruption a central pillar of his administration.
Official media reports indicate that over a million party officials, including two defence ministers and numerous military personnel, have been punished as part of the crackdown.
