Video: NAFDAC Shuts Down 150 Shops in Aba, Seizes ₦5 Billion of Fake and Expired Goods

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) shut down 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, during a two-day operation on 16th and 17th December 2024.

During the raid, NAFDAC uncovered large-scale production and distribution of fake and expired products, including drinks like beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food items such as noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt. The seized items, worth ₦5 billion, were destroyed.

Dr Martins Iluyomade, Director of the South-East Zone, described the market as a hotspot for fake and substandard goods. He expressed disappointment that illegal activities were still thriving, even after market leaders signed an agreement in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, reiterated the Agency’s zero tolerance for such practices and emphasised its commitment to protecting public health while working towards a lasting solution to the problem of counterfeit products.
