Man Allegedly Kills Wife Over Yam in Ebonyi State

A 40-year-old man, Joshua Nwafor, has been accused of killing his wife, Charity Nwafor, following a disagreement over a tuber of yam in Ebonyi State.

The tragic incident occurred on 16th December 2024, in Nsokkara, Ezza South Local Government Area, where the couple resided.

Charity, a native of Awkuzu in Onicha Local Government Area, had been married to Joshua for 17 years and they had children together.

According to an eyewitness account, the argument erupted when Joshua prepared a yam to be cooked for the family. Charity, however, expressed a preference for roasted yam, leading to a heated exchange.

“The man brought out yam to be cooked for the entire family to eat, and the wife told him that she was not going to eat the cooked one, that she preferred roasted one, and went ahead to roast the yam,” the source said.

“As a result, the man got angry and dragged her into the room, locked the door, and beat her till she gave up the ghost,” the eyewitness continued.

The eyewitness lamented the tragic outcome, emphasising the importance of leaving a marriage when it becomes life-threatening.

“I am one of the advocates for walking out of a marriage instead of dying in such a marriage. Life has no duplicate. No matter how old that marriage is, when it becomes life-threatening, please find your way. Leave very fast and never mind what people would say,” the eyewitness added.

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, condemned the incident and assured that the command would conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrator to justice.

“This is sad. Let me confirm if it’s being handled by the command, but rest assured that the command will conduct a thorough investigation and charge whoever is found wanting,” he stated.
