A Nigerian military fighter jet targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group reportedly struck two villages in Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State, killing several villagers and injuring many others.
The affected communities, Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, were hit around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, 25th December 2024, according to local sources cited by Daily Trust.
Malam Yahya, a resident of Silame, explained that the villages are located near Surame Forest, a notorious hideout for the Lakurawa group and bandits.
One source claimed that the airstrike resulted in over 10 fatalities, with many others suffering various degrees of injuries.
Confirming the incident, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Daftarana, chairman of Silame LGA, stated that an assessment of the damage was still underway. He described the tragic event, saying: “The villagers were sitting peacefully when bombs began dropping on the communities. These were innocent, peace-loving people with no criminal records. It’s too early to provide the exact number of casualties, as we are still evaluating the situation.”
Meanwhile, Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, clarified that the incident was unrelated to police operations.
