Stanley Nwabali, goalkeeper for Chippa United and the Nigerian Super Eagles, announced the devastating passing of his mother on Wednesday 1st January 2025.
He wrote on X: “Rip mom, worst year of my life already,” while adding tears and heartbreak emojis on New Year’s Day.
Prior to the announcement, Nwabali had posted, “A very very crazy world indeed,” hinting at the emotional turmoil he was experiencing.
This heartbreaking news comes just two months after the loss of his father during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Nwabali, a standout performer at the 2023 AFCON with five clean sheets, has earned 13 caps for his country.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) commiserated with Nwabali on their X account, writing: “Our heartfelt condolences to Stanley Nwabali on the loss of his mother. Stay strong, Stanley. sending you strength and support during this difficult time. You are not alone; we are all with you.”
