A 34-year-old man has shared the harrowing account of how he narrowly escaped death, while his friend tragically passed away after his 14-year-old bride poisoned their food just two days after their wedding.
Kamisu Haruna, aged 34, recounted the incident to PREMIUM TIMES, explaining that it occurred on 22nd December 2024, at his home in Albasu village, in the Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
Following their wedding on 20th December 2024 in Kiyawa Local Government Area, Haruna took his bride, Zahra’u Dauda, to his home. After the wedding guests had left, Zahra’u sent her friends to deliver food to Haruna at around 10 p.m. Haruna, along with two friends—Muhammad Alpha and Isyaku Adamu—ate the meal.
Haruna described the events leading up to the poisoning: “On Sunday night (22nd December 2024), after the wedding guests had dispersed to their various homes, my friends were preparing to take me to the bride’s room. Suddenly, we saw her friends coming towards a nearby shop where we were sitting. They came with cooked spaghetti with beef and said the bride sent them to give us the food.”
As they ate the food, the three men noticed an unusual chemical taste and immediately stopped eating. Soon after, they began feeling severe stomach pains. Despite trying to relieve their symptoms by drinking milk, their condition worsened. They rushed to the hospital, where Muhammad Alpha was confirmed dead.
Haruna believes his wife was coerced into poisoning him by her former lover, who allegedly provided her with the poison. “After the wedding in Kiyawa, she told me she would return to her town to collect her belongings. It was there that her ex-boyfriend, Lawan Musa, gave her the poison and instructed her to put it in my food,” Haruna claimed.
The groom firmly denied forcing Zahra’u into the marriage, insisting that she loved him but was deceived by her ex-lover due to her inexperience.
“Everyone can testify that we are true lovers. What happened is just our destiny, and it is due to her limited experience in life. She is still my wife, even though her actions led to the death of my friend. We prayed for the repose of his soul, and we hope that law enforcement will deliver justice for all of us,” Haruna stated.
Jigawa State Police spokesperson Lawan Adam confirmed the incident on Saturday, noting that Zahra’u, a resident of Bagata Gabas village, had conspired with her former lover, Lawan Musa, 22, also from Bagata Gabas Yamma village in Kiyawa LGA, to poison her husband’s food.
“The husband and his two friends ate the food together, and as a result, they both developed stomachaches. Victims were rushed to the hospital, where one of the groom’s friends was confirmed dead by the medical doctor on call. The case is under investigation,” Adam said.
