A police officer has fatally shot a nursing mother, Ifeoluwa Adekolu, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, following an incident of celebratory gunfire. The shooting occurred at the Oke-Ila Police Station, where Mrs. Adekolu was standing across the road from the station.
Reports indicate that the officer, who had just arrived from another division, fired his weapon to celebrate a colleague’s promotion. Unfortunately, a stray bullet from the gunfire struck Mrs. Adekolu.
She was quickly taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.
The Commissioner of Police for Ekiti State, Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the incident. He stated that the officer involved has been disarmed and is now in custody.
“The officer involved is currently detained and will undergo thorough interrogation in line with the Nigeria Police Act. This is a tragic and regrettable incident, and the Ekiti State Police Command is committed to ensuring justice is served,” AIG Adeniran said.
