Haaland Brace Sends Man City to Comfortable 4-1 Victory Over West Ham

Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City thrashed West Ham United 4-1 in the English Premier League on Saturday, 4 January 2025, securing their first back-to-back wins since October.

The reigning champions moved up to sixth in the table, with 34 points, while West Ham remained 13th with 23 points.

City took the lead early, with West Ham’s Vladimir Coufal deflecting a shot from Savinho into his own net in the 10th minute. Haaland added a second just before the break, leaping to head in a cross from Savinho in the 42nd minute. After the break, Haaland completed his brace with a cheeky chip over West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola in the 47th minute.

Phil Foden extended City’s lead further in the 58th minute, and although Niclas Fullkrug pulled one back for the Hammers, it was too little, too late.

Palace Stun Chelsea with Late Equaliser in 1-1 Draw

Crystal Palace held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a late equaliser to leave Chelsea winless in four English Premier League games.

Chelsea had taken the lead through Cole Palmer in the 14th minute, following an assist from Jadon Sancho. However, Mateta struck in the 82nd minute to secure a point for Palace, who sit 15th in the league.

Chelsea remain in fourth place with 35 points, just one point ahead of Newcastle United, who defeated Tottenham earlier in the day. The result leaves Palace six points clear of the relegation zone.

Isak Scores Again as Newcastle Edge Tottenham 2-1

Alexander Isak continued his fine form with another goal as Newcastle United overcame Tottenham 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Tottenham took the lead early through Dominic Solanke’s header in the 4th minute, but Newcastle responded quickly, with Anthony Gordon equalising in the 6th minute. Isak then put the visitors ahead in the 38th minute, and despite Tottenham’s second-half pressure, Newcastle held on for their fifth consecutive Premier League win.

Newcastle now sit on 36 points, level with Chelsea in 4th, while Tottenham, plagued by injuries, remain in 12th place.

Mbeumo Double Helps Brentford Hammer Southampton 5-0

Bryan Mbeumo netted a brace as Brentford secured a resounding 5-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s. The Bees scored early through Kevin Schade in the 6th minute, before Mbeumo doubled the lead in the 62nd minute and added a third from the penalty spot in the 69th minute. Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoane Wissa also got on the scoresheet in stoppage time. Southampton, bottom of the table with just six points from 20 matches, remain in deep relegation trouble.

Brentford move up to 10th in the English Premier League, while Southampton face a long fight for survival with only one win so far this season.

Bailey’s Winner Sends Villa Past Leicester 2-1

Leon Bailey’s 76th-minute goal handed Aston Villa a 2-1 victory over Leicester City at Villa Park. Ross Barkley had given Villa the lead in the 58th minute, but Stephy Mavididi equalised for Leicester five minutes later. Bailey’s neat finish secured Villa all three points, moving them to within three points of the top five.

Leicester, who have now lost five matches in a row, remain in 19th place, while Villa are in 8th, three points off the top five.

Brooks’ Stunning Volley Secures Bournemouth’s 1-0 Win Over Everton

David Brooks scored a brilliant volley in the 77th minute to give Bournemouth a 1-0 win over Everton at the Vitality Stadium. The Cherries had struggled to break down a resolute Everton defence but found the breakthrough through Brooks’ superb technique from Milos Kerkez’s cross.

Everton, who failed to register a shot on target, remain just two points above the relegation zone in 16th place, while Bournemouth move up to 7th with 33 points.
