Court Grants N10 Million Bail to Woman Over Death Threats to Seyi Tinubu and IGP

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted Olamide Thomas, a Nigerian woman accused of threatening Seyi Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, with a death threat on social media, bail in the sum of N10 million.

The court further ruled that she must provide a surety in the same amount.

In delivering the judgement on Thomas’ bail application, Justice Nwite stated that the prosecution had failed to provide concrete evidence suggesting that the defendant would abscond.

“I have carefully examined the affidavit evidence of both the defendant and the complainant,” the judge remarked.

Justice Nwite emphasised that as long as the accused would not flee or interfere with the trial, it was in the interest of justice to grant the bail. He directed the surety to submit an affidavit of means and a three-year tax clearance certificate.

Additionally, the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide two recent passport photographs to the registrar, with the surety’s address verified.

The judge adjourned the matter for trial on 18th February. On 31st December 2024, Justice Nwite had deferred the ruling after the defence counsel, T.J. Aondo, and the prosecution lawyer, Victor Okoye, made submissions regarding the bail request.

Thomas was arraigned on 20th December 2024 and remanded in the Suleja Correctional Centre after pleading not guilty to three charges filed by the Inspector-General of Police.

She was arrested for allegedly harassing and threatening Seyi Tinubu, I-G Egbetokun, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a viral social media post.
