Two Dead as Wildfires Rage Across California

At least two people have died in a wildfire in Los Angeles, with firefighters battling five blazes across the state of California.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone confirmed that two fatalities occurred in the Eaton fire, one of four major blazes currently raging in the region. The Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, and Woodley fires are all at zero per cent containment, according to Cal Fire, the state’s fire department.

Marrone also reported a “high number” of significant injuries among residents who chose to ignore evacuation orders. He estimated that 1,000 structures have been destroyed in the Palisades fire alone.

The county sheriff reported that approximately 70,000 people have been ordered to evacuate, and two individuals have been arrested for looting.

Los Angeles Police Chief James McDonnell emphasised the gravity of the situation during a press conference, stating, “This is a tragic time in our history here in Los Angeles, but a time where we’re really tested and see who we really are.” He urged residents under evacuation orders to comply, emphasising that these orders are crucial for their safety.

Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley echoed these concerns, warning that the danger is far from over.

By 5 PM local time, the Palisades fire had consumed over 5,000 acres east of Los Angeles, while the Eaton blaze had grown to more than 2,000 acres.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, 7th January, anticipating the heightened fire danger across Southern California. He mobilised personnel, fire engines, and aircraft to bolster firefighting efforts in the region.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the ongoing situation while visiting California to announce the creation of two new national monuments.
