The Nigerian Police Force has arrested a police officer who was involved in a viral video showing the sons of Lagos billionaire industrialist, Chief Rasaq Okoya, abusing the naira.
In a statement released on Friday, 10th January, via his X handle, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest and detention of the officer. He stated that the officer had been identified and was facing disciplinary action for his unethical and unprofessional conduct.
While the statement condemned the officer’s involvement, no mention was made of any action taken against the Okoya sons, who appeared to be the primary perpetrators of the naira abuse in the viral footage.
The statement read: “The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of the Lagos businessman, Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action.”
The abuse of the naira is a violation of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) regulations, which prohibit the mishandling or spraying of currency during public events.
