Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus was stretchered off during his side’s FA Cup third-round defeat to Manchester United on Sunday, 12th January, after sustaining an injury in the first half of a goalless contest at the Emirates Stadium.
The Brazilian appeared visibly distressed as he was carried off following a seemingly innocuous clash with United captain Bruno Fernandes. Jesus clipped Fernandes just outside Arsenal’s penalty area, causing the United midfielder’s boot to come loose.
In response, Fernandes threw his boot to the ground in frustration after referee Andrew Madley opted not to award a free-kick for the incident. The Portuguese midfielder was subsequently booked for dissent, but the focus quickly shifted to Jesus, who remained down on the pitch and required a stretcher to leave the field.
Jesus’ injury adds to the growing list of concerns for Arsenal, who are already missing key players. Bukayo Saka has been ruled out until March after undergoing surgery for a hamstring injury, while Ethan Nwaneri is sidelined with a muscle issue. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White are also unavailable due to knee injuries.
In the match itself, Manchester United, reduced to 10 men after Diogo Dalot’s red card, secured a 1-1 draw after extra time. Bruno Fernandes had put United ahead in the 52nd minute, but Gabriel Magalhães equalised for Arsenal shortly after. Despite several missed chances, the match was decided by penalties, where Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning spot-kick to seal United’s progression to the next round.
