British Boxer Tyson Fury Announces Retirement from Boxing

British heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury announced his retirement from the sport on Monday, 13th January.

Fury’s decision comes just a month after his rematch loss to Oleksandr Usyk. The 36-year-old boxer shared the news through a short video posted on his Instagram account on Monday.

“Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing,” Fury said. “It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it and I’m going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side,” Fury added.

The reason behind Fury’s mention of Dick Turpin, the infamous 18th-century highwayman, remains unclear.

The rematch against Usyk took place in Saudi Arabia on 21st December, where Fury lost by unanimous decision. Usyk landed 42% of his punches (179 out of 423), while Fury connected with 28% (144 out of 509).

Fury had previously admitted to showboating excessively in their first encounter in Riyadh in May, a fight he lost by split decision.

This is not the first time Fury has announced his retirement. He made a similar declaration on his 34th birthday in August 2022, but he returned to the ring just two months later.

Fury’s professional record stands at 34 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, with 24 wins by knockout. Both of his defeats were to Usyk, marking the only losses in his career, which began in 2008.

His career also includes a draw against American boxer Deontay Wilder in 2018.
