The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a 34-year-old bricklayer, Elela Monday, for the alleged murder of his 14-year-old son, Tope Elela, in Ajowa Akoko, Akoko North-West Local Government Area.
The incident came to light on 30th December following an anonymous tip to the police. Authorities discovered the boy’s body buried in a shallow grave beneath a banana tree behind the family’s residence.
During interrogation, Monday confessed to killing his son, citing the boy’s alleged involvement in criminal activities like housebreaking and stealing as the reason. He claimed these actions were “embarrassing” to the family. However, in a statement to journalists, he later retracted his confession, stating he only beat his son and did not intend to cause his death.
The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, paraded Monday alongside 24 other suspects arrested for various crimes at the command headquarters in Akure on Sunday 12th January.
