The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, was impeached on Monday, 13th January, for gross misconduct and abuse of office.
While the specific details of his impeachment remain sketchy, Obasa has faced numerous allegations of financial impropriety.
In December 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) received a petition from the Progressive Youth Movement of Ikeja, accusing Obasa of financial misconduct, breach of public trust, and abuse of office. The petition alleged that Obasa used proxy companies to embezzle funds from the Assembly, violated procurement regulations, and made unauthorized financial decisions.
Furthermore, the petition accused Obasa of awarding a N469 million contract for the Construction of Ikeja Local Government Secretariat to Orgnitek Consult Limited, and approving N200 million for a thanksgiving ceremony at the Assembly, which the petitioners deemed excessive.
Obasa has denied these allegations, describing them as “nonsensical” and politically motivated. He questioned the reasonableness of the expenditures and denied any personal involvement in the accused companies.
