A violent communal clash erupted between the Owake and Ebo communities in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State on Sunday night, leaving one person feared dead and numerous others injured.
The conflict, fueled by long-standing land disputes and boundary issues, resulted in significant property damage. The palace of the Asin of Oka-Odo, an event hall, and several residential buildings were destroyed by hoodlums.
The crisis escalated when members of the Owake Community, acting on an Appeal Court judgment, attempted to install signposts on lands they claim ownership of along Ikun Road. On their return, they were ambushed by suspected thugs from the Ebo community, leading to a violent confrontation.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident and deployed officers to restore order. Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi urged all parties to cease hostilities, emphasizing that violence and destruction would only hinder development.
The clash reportedly began when youths from Oka Odo, while on a hunting expedition, were mistakenly attacked by Ebo youths who believed them to be from Owake. This sparked retaliation from Oka Odo, leading to arson and further violence.
The police are investigating the incident and have deployed a team to ensure peace and apprehend the perpetrators of violence from both sides.
