The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Jigawa State has rescued ten suspected victims of human trafficking.
NIS Comptroller Mr Tahir Musa revealed this during a press briefing in Dutse on Tuesday 14th January 2025. He stated that the victims were apprehended on Sunday, 12th January, at Tsamiyar Kwance in Babura Local Government Area whilst attempting to reach the Niger Republic en route to Europe.
The victims, aged between 21 and 30, comprised two males and eight females. Six were from Ogun State, two from Ondo State, one from Oyo State, and another from Imo State.
According to Comptroller Musa, the victims confessed to being transported from various locations to Kano and then to Babura, with the ultimate goal of crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Europe via Libya.
He urged parents to closely monitor their children to prevent them from falling prey to deceitful promises of a better life abroad.
Comptroller Musa emphasised that the NIS, under the leadership of Comptroller-General Mrs Kemi Nandap, is actively working with the Jigawa State government to minimise irregular migration within the state.
The rescued victims were subsequently handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further action.
