The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has granted the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) a license to register inmates across its 252 custodial centers for National Identity Numbers (NIN).
This decision follows a request by Acting Controller-General Sylvester Nwakuche during a visit to NIMC Director-General Engr Abisoye Coker-Odusote.
Nwakuche emphasized the importance of NIN registration for inmates, stating that it would:
End exclusion: Prevent inmates from being excluded from national development plans.
Enhance safety and security: Improve inmate safety and security within correctional facilities.
Facilitate recapture: Aid in the recapture of escaped inmates.
He highlighted the increasing number of inmates acquiring higher education degrees within correctional facilities and stressed the need for their inclusion in national development initiatives. Nwakuche also emphasized the importance of including inmates awaiting trial in national planning and census activities.
Engr Coker-Odusote emphasized the critical role of NIN in national development, citing its integration with bank accounts and its importance in government initiatives like student loan programs. She highlighted the alignment of this partnership with President Bola Tinubu’s Eight Points Agenda, which emphasizes digital identity.
Coker-Odusote expressed satisfaction with the partnership, noting previous collaborations with agencies like the Nigeria Immigration Service. She commended Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for his leadership in driving reforms within the correctional service system.
