The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Peter Ugan, 34, from Ogoja in Cross River State, for the alleged rape of a teenage girl with sickle cell disorder.
Ugan was apprehended by detectives from the Mabushi Division after he was almost lynched by a mob.
According to reports, Ugan lured the victim, a virgin, into a room and raped her on 6th January 2025. The assault caused severe internal bleeding.
The victim, who was staying with her aunt in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, had come to Abuja to attend Government Day Secondary School, Mabushi.
Ugan, aware of the seriousness of his actions, locked the girl inside the room and attempted to treat her injuries with over-the-counter medication.
The incident occurred in an unfinished building where Ugan occasionally stayed. He had befriended the victim and lured her into the building under the pretence of needing assistance.
The victim’s mother discovered her daughter’s injuries and alerted the authorities. A mob apprehended Ugan and attempted to lynch him before the police intervened.
The victim was rushed to hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery and received blood transfusions.
Medical tests conducted on Ugan revealed that he was HIV-positive.
During police interrogation, Ugan initially claimed the encounter was consensual but later admitted to knowing the victim was a virgin during the assault.
Ugan stated that he used a condom but did not acknowledge the severity of the victim’s injuries during the act.
The incident has sparked outrage and highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness and prevention of sexual violence.
