Abducted Anambra Medical Doctor Regains Freedom

Dr Cornelius Onuigbo, a medical doctor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra, who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen, has been released.

Onuigbo was abducted on Tuesday evening outside his Nnewi home as he returned from work. He spent two nights in captivity before being released in the early hours of Thursday, 23rd January.

His release was confirmed by both his colleagues in the Urology Department at NAUTH and Martina Onwuka, Head of Corporate Affairs at the hospital.

It remains unclear whether a ransom was paid for his release or if he escaped from his captors.

A colleague in the Urology Department, speaking to journalists on condition of anonymity, confirmed the news.

“We are grateful that he has been released, although we are unsure if a ransom was paid. We cannot confirm his physical condition, but anyone who undergoes such a traumatic experience will undoubtedly be affected. The psychological trauma alone is significant, but we are thankful that he has been reunited with his family. We give thanks to God for saving his life,” the colleague said.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, also confirmed the doctor’s release.
