Timileyin Ajayi, accused of murdering a young woman in Nasarawa State, pleaded not guilty in court on Monday, 27th January.
Ajayi, 32, was arraigned before Justice Simon Aboki of the High Court of Justice in Lafia on one count of culpable homicide, which is punishable by death under Nigerian law.
The charges stem from the murder of Salome Adaidu, a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, on 12th January. Adaidu, who worked at Nicon Insurance in Abuja, was visiting Ajayi at his home in New Karshi when she was killed.
Despite having previously confessed to the crime and claiming that he killed his “girlfriend” due to alleged infidelity, Ajayi entered a “not guilty” plea in court. However, the family of the deceased has denied that the two were in a romantic relationship.
According to them, they had no prior knowledge of Ajayi and were unaware of any such relationship between him and their sister. Additionally, reports that Ajayi was a gospel singer have also been debunked.
