AY Makun Urges Blogs and ‘Online In-Laws’ to Stop Exploiting Marital Issues for Sensationalism

Nigerian comedian AY Makun has taken to social media to criticise online in-laws and blogs for their “sensationalism” surrounding marital failures.

In a post shared on Tuesday, 28th January, AY lamented the growing trend of individuals and online platforms exploiting marital breakdown for entertainment and engagement.

AY Makun urged that attention be directed towards the reasons why the institution of marriage itself is under attack. He emphasised that no one enters into marriage with the intention to fail.

The comedian expressed concern over the troubling tendency of online in-laws and blogs to revel in sensationalism, often at the expense of those who are hurting. He reminded his audience that real lives are involved and called for a shift towards empathy over drama and content, adding that some individuals would not rest until they lead another human being to suicide.

“Instead of casting blame in broken marriages that you know nothing about, why not focus on the reasons why the institution itself is under attack,” the comedian wrote. “No one goes in with a plan to fail. It’s troubling to see online inlaws and blogs revel in sensationalism, often at the expense of those hurting. Real lives are involved – let’s choose empathy over drama and content. Some of you will never rest until you lead a fellow human to suicide.”

The post has garnered significant attention, with over 83,000 views at the time of writing. This comes amidst ongoing marital issues between actress Annie and her husband, music icon 2Baba (Innocent Idibia).
