Sergio Ramos is set to join Mexican side Monterrey after agreeing to a one-year contract until December 2025, according to ESPN.
The former Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Sevilla defender, 38, signed a pre-contract agreement on Sunday, with Monterrey executives travelling to Spain to finalise the details. He is due to undergo a medical in Madrid on Monday before travelling to Mexico later this week.
Ramos, a free agent since leaving Sevilla at the end of last season, had been linked with a move to Fenerbahce and a reunion with his former Real Madrid manager, José Mourinho.
According to ESPN, despite the pair’s previously turbulent relationship at Real Madrid (2010-2013), Fenerbahce were among several interested parties. However, Monterrey ultimately secured his signature.
Monterrey coach Martin Demichelis confirmed the impending arrival after their 1-0 win over Necaxa this weekend. “I have little to add about Sergio,” Demichelis said. “[On Sunday], club officials will be travelling to Madrid to do the necessary things so that Sergio can come. The medical check-up and his work visa will be done there in Madrid, so that he can arrive as soon as possible. Next week, we’ll have the presentation of all the players who have arrived, with Sergio included. That would be great.”
Ramos enjoyed a hugely successful 16-year spell at Real Madrid, where he came through the academy, captained the club, and won four Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles.
He left Madrid on a free transfer in 2021, spending two seasons with PSG before returning to Sevilla for the 2023-24 season. Since leaving Sevilla in June, he has regularly updated his social media channels, showing him maintaining his fitness while searching for a new club.
