In a fiery post on Truth Social on Sunday evening, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would be cutting all future aid to South Africa, citing concerns over the alleged mistreatment of the country’s white population and controversial land expropriation laws.
“South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY. It is a bad situation that the Radical Left Media doesn’t want to so much as mention,” Trump wrote on 2nd February 2025.
He went on to describe the situation in South Africa as “a massive Human Rights VIOLATION” and vowed that the United States would “not stand for it” and would “act” to address what he called a violation of basic human rights.
The post follows the recent signing of a new expropriation bill by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The legislation grants the government the authority to seize land without compensation, ostensibly for public purposes or in the public interest. The law is part of South Africa’s ongoing land reform programme, aimed at addressing historical injustices related to land distribution during the apartheid era.
However, critics, including Trump, have argued that the new law disproportionately targets white farmers, many of whom have long held significant agricultural land in the country. Some critics contend that this move is not only an attempt at land redistribution but could also be viewed as a government-sanctioned effort to confiscate property from South Africa’s white population.
Trump’s decision to withhold U.S. aid is framed as a reaction to what he perceives as a blatant disregard for human rights in South Africa. In his post, he demanded that a “full investigation” into the situation be completed before any future American assistance could be considered.
“The United States won’t stand for it. We will act,” Trump said. He reiterated that all future funding to South Africa would be halted until the investigation is completed.
South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY. It is a bad situation that the Radical Left Media doesn’t want to so much as mention. A massive Human Rights VIOLATION, at a minimum, is happening for all to see. The United States won’t stand…

The U.S. President’s statement is likely to spark diplomatic tensions between the two countries, especially given South Africa’s ongoing struggle with its land reform initiatives. While some see the reforms as a necessary step toward addressing the legacy of apartheid, others view them as unfairly targeting a specific demographic.
