Lagos State’s e-hailing community is in mourning following the tragic death of one of their own. Yusfat Ayinde, a 42-year-old driver, was fatally stabbed on the evening of Friday, 7th February 2025, in what appears to be a robbery.
Jaiyesinmi Azeez, chairman of the Lagos State Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria, confirmed the incident, stating that Mr Ayinde was on duty when he accepted a ride request. Upon arriving at the pick-up location, he was met by a group of assailants who attacked and stabbed him before stealing his vehicle. Mr Ayinde’s body was later discovered along Agindigbi Road in Ikeja.
Mr Azeez described the victim as a member of the union and an administrator for a group of professional chauffeurs in the state. He expressed deep concern for the safety of e-hailing drivers and called for increased security measures.
The union is working with Mr Ayinde’s family and the authorities to investigate the crime. They are attempting to identify the app used to request the ride and are cooperating with law enforcement to track the perpetrators. Mr Azeez emphasised the union’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.
In the wake of this tragedy, the union is exploring new safety protocols for drivers, including emergency response systems and heightened surveillance in potentially dangerous areas. They have also pledged support for Mr Ayinde’s family during this difficult time. Mr Azeez stated that updates on the investigation will be released as they become available.
