A one-year-old boy who was celebrating his birthday with family was almost raped by a relative in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
The incident happened at about 06:38 am on Tuesday, 11th February 2025. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was called to the home by the child’s mother, who reported that she had found her relative naked in her bedroom on top of her baby.
Upon arriving at the scene, Reaction Officers found several women, including the child’s mother and grandmother, assaulting the suspect.
When interviewed, the mother explained that while getting her daughter ready for school, she had entered the room to find the man with his clothing off, attempting to rape her son.
The relative had stayed over after attending the child’s birthday party the previous night and requested to use the en-suite bathroom before the incident.
According to the mother, the man was naked from the waist down and had his shirt pulled up to his chest.
Reaction Officers restrained the man when he tried to intimidate the family in their presence. He was then covered with a towel. The man had sustained open wounds to his mouth and face after he was assaulted by several other women at the scene.
A man who identified himself as the child’s father informed Reaction Officers that he is a policeman and intended to resolve the problem internally with his family.
Officers declined and called the local South African Police Service (SAPS) to register a criminal case.
