Edwin Clark, Elder Statesman, Dies at 97

Chief Edwin Clark, former Federal Commissioner for Information and prominent South-South leader, has died. He passed away on Monday night, February 17, 2025, at the age of 97, according to a family statement.  

The statement from the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, announced the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON, and expressed gratitude for prayers during this time.

The statement read: The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON on Monday 17th February , 2025. The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family.”

Born in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Chief Clark received his early education at primary and secondary schools in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene. He later attended the Government Teacher Training College (now Delta State University, Abraka) and briefly worked as a teacher before pursuing a law degree abroad.  

Between 1966 and 1975, he served under the administrations of military governor Samuel Ogbemudia and Head of State General Yakubu Gowon. He was a member of the advisory committee to the military governor of the Mid-Western Region, David Ejoor, in 1966, and was appointed Federal Commissioner of Information in 1975.
