Lokoja University Closed Indefinitely After Student Deaths

The Federal University, Lokoja, in Kogi State has been closed indefinitely following the deaths of six students in a road accident.

The university’s registrar, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, announced the closure on Thursday, 20th February, stating that students had been protesting and blocking the university gates since the accident on Monday, 17th February 2025.

Despite interventions from the state government and appeals from the university management, the student protests continued.

Acting on the advice of state security agencies, the vice-chancellor, in consultation with the university senate, made the decision to close both campuses. Students were required to leave campus by noon on Thursday, 20th February.

The five students were killed in a lorry accident at Felele. Prior to the closure, student union president Comrade Benjamin Olorunfemi Timothy had threatened to block the highway near the campus to draw attention to the issue of road safety in the area.
