The Niger State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Joy Nuwa, who, in collaboration with others, abducted her cousin’s six-month-old baby in Suleja.
They took the child to the Federal Capital Territory with the intention of selling her.
Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed in a statement that the baby has been rescued and safely returned to her mother.
According to the police, the baby’s mother had asked Nuwa to care for the child while she ran an errand. However, instead of fulfilling this responsibility, Nuwa, along with some neighbors, took the baby to Kubwa, Abuja, planning to sell her to a buyer.
When the mother returned, she discovered that Joy and the infant were gone. Joy claimed to have shut the door and left the baby inside the house after speaking with her cousin. Following an inquiry that revealed no forced entry into the house, police questioned neighbors Favour James and Emmanuel Ezekiel, who were subsequently taken into custody.
Emmanuel acknowledged that he and Joy had plotted to sell the infant by bringing it to one Patience Obana in Kubwa, Abuja. The infant was later rescued unhurt, and Joy, Favour, and Patience were taken into custody.
For further investigation and prosecution, all suspects have been moved to Minna’s State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCID).
