Policeman Accused of Wife’s Murder After Valentine’s Day Shooting

On Thursday, 20th February, Police Sergeant Ngudumane Hamlet Mahlalela of the South African Police Service (SAPS) showed up before Protea Magistrates’ Court accused of killing his wife.

Mahlalela is accused of shooting and killing his wife, Jane Mashudu Mahlalela, who was also a member of the SAPS, at their Protea Glen, Soweto, home on 14th February 2025.

It has been alleged that family members heard a gunshot after the pair argued about Mrs. Mahlalela not sleeping at home the night before. After that, Mr. Mahlalela left the scene with a small child in tow.

He remained at large until 18th February 2025, when he turned himself in to Moroka SAPS. Later, the child was discovered at his aunt’s house, safe.

The matter has been rescheduled for a formal hearing on a bail application on 25th February 2025.
