Students of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA), Katsina State, have taken to the streets again in a renewed demonstration demanding justice for their slain colleague, Saidu Abdulkadir, who was shot dead by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) on Sunday, 23rd February.
The victim, identified as a 25-year-old student from the Department of Agricultural Extension, was travelling on a commercial motorcycle with the rider, Abubakar Yusuf, 40 when they were stopped by four members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) operating in a Hilux vehicle.
The incident occurred around 11:06 a.m. on Sunday at Kashe-Naira Quarters.
According to SaharaReporters, when the duo allegedly failed to stop as ordered, one of the CJTF operatives, whose identity remains unknown, opened fire. Abdulkadir sustained gunshot wounds to his thigh and hips, while Yusuf was hit in the thigh.
They were immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Dutsin-Ma, and later referred to the Orthopedic Hospital, Katsina, where Abdulkadir succumbed to his injuries around 3:00 p.m.
A distressing video obtained by SaharaReporters shows the student bleeding profusely from his thigh while onlookers attempted to stop the blood flow.
Abdulkadir’s fellow students who felt his death was a product of a failed system stormed major roads to call for immediate intervention of relevant authorities.
They insisted that authorities must ensure accountability for the killing.
A counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad area, Zagazola Makama, shared photos of the protesting students on his X account on Monday.
This latest demonstration follows an earlier peaceful protest that was met with tear gas by security forces, further fuelling students’ grievances over what they describe as systemic oppression and brutality.
It was learned that the school management also met with the protesting students on Sunday and promised to take appropriate action to ensure justice is served in this case.
However, some students remain unconvinced, arguing that this is not the first time members of the CJTF have been implicated in similar extrajudicial killings in Dutsin-Ma.
