Teenage Student Hospitalized After Attempted Suicide Following Bullying in South Africa

On Thursday, 27th February 2025, a 17-year-old girl from a high school in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, was admitted to the hospital following an unsuccessful suicide attempt. According to reports, the student overdosed on medicine and cut her wrists.

The student was in critical condition when Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived at her home (address withheld) in response to a call. She was taken right away for quick medical attention to a nearby hospital.

According to the student’s mother, who spoke to RUSA police, her Grade 11 daughter had been the target of ongoing bullying at school and the school administration had not taken any meaningful action to stop it. She stated that an assault on her daughter, captured on video and circulated online in 2024, showed a group of students harassing her. Despite this evidence, no disciplinary action was taken against the perpetrators.
