Fulham Condemns Racist Abuse of Calvin Bassey After FA Cup Win Against Man United

In the wake of the Nigerian Football Federation’s (NFF) vehement disapproval of the racial abuse directed at Calvin Bassey, Premier League club Fulham has also issued a strong statement condemning the racist attacks levelled against the Super Eagles defender.

These attacks followed Fulham’s penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday, 2nd March.

Fulham has pledged to pursue the “strongest possible measures” against those responsible for the abusive messages, which the defender publicly shared on his social media platforms.

During the match at Old Trafford, Bassey opened the scoring, preceding Bruno Fernandes’ equalising goal. Ultimately, the west London club triumphed in the penalty shoot-out, securing a quarter-final berth with a 4-3 victory.

A statement on the Fulham website said: “Fulham is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United.

“We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.

“We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them.

“Fulham Football Club is committed to maintaining a firm stance against all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.”
