Ex-Atlético Madrid’s Andrea Berta Set for Arsenal Sporting Director Role

Arsenal are nearing the completion of their search for a new sporting director, with Andrea Berta emerging as the leading candidate, according to information obtained by ESPN.

This follows a rigorous selection procedure initiated after Edu’s resignation in November, which triggered a six-month period of gardening leave.

The north London club, under the guidance of managing director Richard Garlick, with input from executive vice-chair Tim Lewis, co-chair Josh Kroenke, and manager Mikel Arteta, considered a range of potential appointees. Among those shortlisted were former Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth, ex-Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky, and Roberto Olabe, who is set to depart Real Sociedad at the season’s end.

However, recent developments indicate that Arsenal have advanced discussions with Berta. A source has informed ESPN that an agreement could be finalised within the coming week. Berta, who departed Atlético Madrid in January, was previously in negotiations with AC Milan, but those talks ultimately collapsed.

His potential arrival would significantly bolster Arsenal’s recruitment division, which has been operating under the interim leadership of Edu’s deputy, Jason Ayto.

During his 12-year tenure at Atlético, Berta was instrumental in their ability to compete effectively against the financially stronger Real Madrid and Barcelona in LaLiga.

It has also come to light that Edu was approached by Nottingham Forest and Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis with an offer to oversee their multi-club operation, which included a substantial salary increase.

Arsenal declined to provide any official comment when contacted by ESPN.
